Designing with a Positive Purpose
The skills that designers have should be used to create materials that result in positive effects upon the world.
There is a need for improved environmental literacy. Through the designers' skills to bring across complicated
information in a clear and concise manner they have a great potential to make these improvements. Information
design for environmental education and public awareness is design with a real and positive purpose.
There is a need for information to be shown to all peoples, that is unbiased, accurate, and easily
understandable for everyone that is involved. Educating people through design will let people make
informed decisions on issues that they are normally informed about by biased messengers who's main
concerns are material - such as profits or votes. Information designers have a responsibility to make
available these topics, both pro and con ideas, and also to gain people's interest in what is happening
around them. The skills that information designers possess should be used to educate and inform the citizenry
of issues that they would not normally be aware of and to present this information as unbiased, clear, and
concise material that results in positive action.

I studied Information Design in The Netherlands at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht
(HKU Utrecht School of the Arts) and also at my home university the University of Idaho.
During these studies many informational pieces were created including my main project entitled,
Design for Social and Environmental Improvement. Created were information graphics, diagrams,
pamphlets, booklets, and posters, for Homeowners that discussed and showed how elements such as
their outside landscaping and their indoor appliance usage could save them a significant amount of money
while improving not only their way of life but the environment that we all live in and share with the
many creatures of the world.
